College Planning for Federal Families: Maximizing Your Education Funding Options
As a federal employee, tackling your children’s college education costs might seem overwhelming at first. The good news? Your federal service opens doors to some unique benefits and strategies that can make this financial challenge much more manageable. While we covered 529 Plans and Coverdell Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) in our last article, today let’s focus on some Fed-specific opportunities you might not know about.
Let’s start with scholarships designed specifically for federal families. The Worldwide Assurance for Employees of Public Agencies (WAEPA) runs an impressive scholarship program that’s grown significantly over the years. They’ve awarded more than $2.8 million in scholarships to over 1,200 children of WAEPA members since 2007. For 2025, they’re offering 90 scholarships – 80 for students heading to four-year colleges and 10 for those pursuing two-year colleges or vocational-technical programs. If you’re a WAEPA member with a child under 23 who maintains at least a 3.0 GPA, mark your calendar: applications for the 2025 program close next Monday, February 17, 2025, at 4 p.m. ET.
The Federal Employee Education & Assistance Fund (FEEA) offers another valuable opportunity through their merit-based scholarships. If you’re a civilian federal or postal employee with at least three years of service, your children could qualify for awards ranging from $1,000 to $7,500. They’ve supported over 11,000 federal families’ educational dreams since 1986.
Here’s something your HR department might not have mentioned: the Federal Academic Alliance. Through OPM, this program has partnered with numerous colleges and universities to offer reduced tuition rates for federal employees and often extends these benefits to spouses and legal dependents. It’s worth checking with your agency’s HR team to see which specific institutions participate and what discounts they offer.
Don’t overlook OPM’s Work-Life programs and your own agency’s specific offerings. Many agencies provide additional education benefits and resources to help your family achieve their educational goals. By combining these federal employee perks with smart savings strategies, you can build a solid plan for your family’s education future. Connect with your benefits coordinator for the latest details on these programs – they’re there to help you make the most of your federal benefits
