Will FLTCIP come back?
In light of our article today on long-term care, you may be wondering about the ongoing suspension of the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP). This blurb focuses on whether new applications for FLTCIP will be reinstated in the future and is not referencing current enrollees and their decisions about premium increases.
The suspension began on December 19, 2022, and is set to last for 24 months. During this time, no new applications have been accepted, and current enrollees have not been able to apply for increased coverage.
The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has remained fairly quiet on this issue, which isn’t surprising—think of it as being in the middle of a contract renegotiation, where both sides keep things under wraps until a deal is reached. OPM has also allowed for the possibility of extending the suspension with a subsequent notice.
The suspension was implemented to assess rising costs and the overall sustainability of the program. As of now, no official decision has been made about whether FLTCIP will return, be extended, or undergo changes. When (or if) it does come back, it’s possible the program will include adjustments to premiums, coverage, or other policy details.
We’ll keep this on your radar as we approach the deadline for OPM’s decision—whether to reinstate the program, extend the suspension, or take more time to evaluate.
